BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MAGISTRATE SYSTEM, CURRENT PROCEDURE UNDER THE ACT AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPEDITING THE ACTIVITIES OF THE FEDERAL JUDICIAL SYSTEM BY ITS USE.
Abstract
IN 1968, USING THE UNITED STATES COMMISSIONER SYSTEM AS ITS BASIS, CONGRESS ESTABLISHED A NEW BASIC LEVEL OF COURT OFFICIALS. MEMBERS ARE LEGALLY TRAINED TO HANDLE ALL PRELIMINARY PROCEDURES IN CRIMINAL FELONY CASES AND CIVIL ACTIONS, AND TO DISPOSE MORE QUICKLY OF FEDERAL MISDEMEANORS. EARLY RESULTS OF THE ACT'S IMPLEMENTATION INDICATE THAT THE SYSTEM IS OPERATING SUCCESSFULLY.
