This chapter examines the concept of crime scripts as a tool to better understand and thus prevent and disrupt organized crime.
Abstract
The script approach to analyzing crime means identifying a crime according to the routine steps followed by the criminal and using this identification to find crime prevention solutions. This chapter discusses the concept and use of crime scripts to better understand and thus prevent and disrupt organized crime. A general overview of crime scripts is presented along with a more detailed description of the usual parts of the organized crime script. The organized crime script can be broken down into three key components: the criminal lifestyle, the organized crime group or network, and the primary criminal act/offense/enterprise. These components are discussed in more detail in this chapter and are presented in a table format to show the integrated processes associated with the commission of certain organized crimes by plotting the key stages of the offense. Understanding these processes enables authorities to discover more options for use in preventing and disrupting organized crime. Tables, figure, notes, and references
