The organization and facilities of the detective division of the Nassau County Police Department (N.Y.), one of the 10 largest police departments in the country, are described.
Abstract
The chief of detectives is in immediate command of the detective division and is responsible for establishing priorities and the means by which these objectives will be accomplished. The detective division has the responsibility for continuing investigations beyond the preliminary stage, which is conducted by the uniformed officers. The office of chief of detectives is charged with the administration and supervision of the detective division. It is staffed by the chief of detectives, the chief's deputies, and supervisory officers detailed as commanding officers of the various principal subdivisions of this division. The squads consist of (1) the precinct detective squads, which conduct the initial investigation of most crimes referred to the division; (2) the organized crime squads, which consist of the rackets squad, the vice squad, and the narcotics squad; (3) special squads, which consist of the automobile squad, the forgery squad, the fugitive squad, the property recovery squad, and the bomb squad; and (4) the major offense squads, which consist of the arson squad, the burglary squad, the homicide squad, the robbery squad, and the special-investigations squad. The technical service bureau consists of the crime scene search unit, the latent fingerprint unit, the photography unit, and the scientific investigation bureau. An organization chart is provided.
