Founded in 1970, the New York Drug Enforcement Task Force (NYDEFT) has operated under an agreement of understanding among the three participating agencies: the Drug Enforcement Administration, the New York Police Department, and the New York State Police.
Abstract
Because of the phenomenal success of the NYDEFT, a regional multiagency task force has been established in upstate New York to investigate drug law offenses, and an organized crime task force (OCTF) has been implemented to investigate and prosecute organized crime activities involving two or more counties. Since their inception, the NYDEFT and the OCTF have resolved numerous cases successfully. They gained convictions of 3 top leaders of ruling crime families, indicted 21 organized crime members on coercive and anticompetitive practices in the private garbage industry, seized 15 clandestine drug laboratories, arrested 21 individuals charged with conspiracy to distribute heroin, and seized cash and other drug-related assets.
