DESCRIPTION OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE CORRECTIONS SYSTEM, INMATE PROGRAMS OFFERED, AND A DISCUSSION OF CHARACTERISTICS OF INMATES IN NORTH CAROLINA PRISONS.
Abstract
THE AUTHORS DISCUSS THE TRAINING PROGRAMS AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR CUSTODIAL STAFF. THE STATE OPERATES A VARIETY OF INMATE PROGRAMS WHICH MAY BE CATEGORIZED INTO FOUR GROUPS - VOCATIONAL, ACADEMIC, ENTERPRISE, AND COUNSELING. THE ENTERPRISE PROGRAMS INVOLVE WORK IN PRISON INDUSTRIES. THE WORK RELEASE, PRE-RELEASE, STUDY RELEASE, HOME LEAVE, COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER, EX-OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT AND LEGAL PROGRAMS ARE DISCUSSED. BEHAVIORAL DISORDER IS THE DOMINANT PERSONALITY CHARACTERISTIC OF THE INMATES. MOST OF THE PRISONERS HAVE AVERAGE IQ SCORES. EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT WAS LOW, AND MOST OF THE INMATES WERE UNSKILLED OCCUPATIONALLY.
