This article describes a training database developed by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Abstract
In 2003, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department established its own Detention Training Unit, which came with a single computer, one sergeant, four deputies, and no clerk. The old training records database only had the capacity to handle 1 years’ worth of data and required time-consuming data entry responsibilities. In response, the small staff of the Detention Training Unit worked with IT staff and members of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Data Services Division to create a new database with the following features: integrated records, paperless records, multi-user capabilities, management reports, and the ability to interface with other systems. The most recent training audit by the Corrections Standards Authority praised the new database for its ease of use and efficiency. Future plans call for the database to allow every employee to view and print their own training records from any computer on the Sheriff’s secured network. Exhibits
