A STUDY OF CORRECTIONS PROFESSIONALS, POLICE PROSECUTORS, AND JUDGES TO DETERMINE THE EXPECTATIONS EACH GROUP HAS REGARDING THE ROLES OF THE PAROLE BOARD.
Abstract
PERSONS OCCUPYING VARIOUS POSITIONS IN A SOCIAL SYSTEM ARE EXPECTED BY OTHERS TO BEHAVE IN CERTAIN WAYS AND THEY DEFINE FOR THEMSELVES CERTAIN APPROPRIATE WAYS OF ACTING. BOTH SETS OF EXPECTATIONS MAKE UP THE INDIVIDUAL'S ROLE. THE STUDY EXAMINES THE RELATIONSHIP AMONG THE FOLLOWING (1) ROLE EXPECTATIONS OF INCUMBENTS OF THE FOCAL POSITION OF PAROLE BOARD MEMBER, (2) ROLE EXPECTATIONS OF INCUMBENTS OF COUNTER POSITIONS, SUCH AS ATTORNEYS, LAWENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, AND PAROLE OFFICERS, (3) ACCURACY OF PERCEPTION AMONG INCUMBENTS OF THE FOCAL AND COUNTER POSITIONS, AND (4) A SET OF INDEPENDENT VARIABLES, HYPOTHESIZED TO BE MEANINGFUL FOR ROLE ANALYSIS. IN THE ANALYSIS, THE PRINCIPAL ANALYTICAL UNITS ARE POSITIONS RATHER THAN PERSONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
