EXAMINATION OF THE CONTROL AND ASSISTANCE FUNCTIONS OF PAROLE SUPERVISION.
Abstract
THIS STUDY INVOLVED FIFTY-THREE PAROLEES AND THEIR CORRESPONDING TWENTY-FOUR PAROLE OFFICERS. EXAMINED WERE THOSE AREAS IN WHICH THE PAROLE OFFICER HAS EITHER MORE EXTENSIVE OR MORE LIMITED KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HIS PAROLEES' SITUATION. THE DATA REVEALED THAT ALL PAROLE OFFICERS KNEW FACTS SUCH AS PLACE OF RESIDENCE, MARITAL STATUS, AND PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT. THEY WERE LESS AWARE OF INFORMATION ON THEIR ASSISTANCE FUNCTION, SUCH AS THE PAROLEES' FAMILY ENVIRONMENT, RELATIONSHIPS, ATTITUDES, INTERESTS, AND ACTIVITIES. FACTORS WHICH CONTRIBUTE TO THIS FORMAL WORKER-CLIENT RELATIONSHIP ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. THESE INCLUDE THE DIFFERENT SOCIAL BACKGROUNDS, THE EXTENSIVE DISCRETIONARY POWERS OF THE PAROLE OFFICER, AND THE PAROLE OFFICER'S LAW ENFORCEMENT ROLE. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT THE STRUCTURE OF PAROLE SUPERVISION IS SUCH THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE PAROLE OFFICER TO FULFILL HIS ASSISTANCE FUNCTION. A LIST OF REFERENCES IS PROVIDED. --SUMMARY IN FRENCH
