A SIGNIFICANT PROPORTION OF DEFENDANTS - 35.7 PERCENT OF THE SAMPLE - WERE DISPOSED OF WITHOUT THE ISSUES OF THEIR CASES BEING CONSIDERED BY A JURY.
Abstract
CASES IN WHICH THE JURY WAS BY-PASSED FELL INTO TWO CATEGORIES - THOSE IN WHICH THE DEFENDANTS CHANGED THEIR PLEAS, AND THOSE IN WHICH THE DEFENDANTS WERE ACQUITTED BY JUDICIAL DIRECTION. THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THESE TWO CATEGORIES WERE EXAMINED.
