Video technology has been embraced by all sectors in law enforcement and, for most police departments, the question has become not whether to add video equipment to patrol cars but rather what system to install.
Abstract
A mobile video system consists of a recording device, a controller, a mounting or enclosure for the equipment, and a wireless audio system worn by the police officer on the belt. Types of available mobile video systems include dash-mounted, in- compartment, trunk-mounted, and portable systems. In deciding which system to use, an important consideration is whether the system is for industrial or consumer use. Industrial systems are designed to handle the rigors of a mobile environment, whereas most off-the-shelf consumer systems are not suitable for law enforcement use. In system selection, consideration should also be paid to issues concerned with reliability, equipment size, ease of installation, and immunity from radio frequencies. Future technologies related to police patrol car video systems are noted. 4 photographs
