The pattern of public perception of crime, theft, and house-burglary in Madras city was analyzed in a questionnaire using the Likert method.
Abstract
A sample of 3,151 households, representing one percent of the occupied residential houses on each street, was randomly chosen to be contacted and interviewed. For each of the 150 census divisions, the average scores for perception of crime, theft, and house-burglary were tabulated. A one-way analysis of variance showed significant variation by geographical area in the city with the highest scores coming from the newly developed peripheral areas in the west and south and the lowest scores from the older parts of North Madras. All the high scoring areas were located far off from the central business district. Respondents along the periphery who perceived the theft rate to be high perceived the house-burglary rate to be low. 4 figures, 3 tables, 4 references. (Author abstract modified)
