This article describes a photography process that can reduce the cost and increase the usefulness of booking procedures.
Abstract
PhotoMug includes a digital camera, color printer and software. Photo images are stored on a computer's hard drive or on floppy discs. The images are brighter and more detailed than those produced with conventional cameras, can be stored in much less space, are easier to find and retrieve, and cost less to produce than instant film. To create a photo lineup, police can put characteristics of a suspect into the computer and it will search the database for those mugshots that match the description. The process is quick and efficient, and helps police produce a photo lineup that will meet court-mandated acceptability standards. Once police cars are equipped with mobile data terminals, officers could access the mugshot database to verify the identity of a suspect in custody. Enhancements of the PhotoMug system will extend its usefulness to arson and bomb work.
