Applicants for the public safety officer position should be tested on their level of physical fitness and conditioning. The University of Georgia Physical Agility Test emphasizes an injury prevention approach to physical fitness and conditioning.
Abstract
The university test contains a step test, agility run, shuttle run, 440-yard run, and a body drag. After initial testing and tryouts, applicants and academy trainees were tested. Only 9 out of 41 applicants failed to meet the standards. The test evaluates male and female applicants fairly, concentrates on endurance levels rather than muscular strength, emphasizes safety. The test has proven beneficial to departmental morale. Each test used is described in terms of underlying rationale, procedures followed, and equipment required. Photographs and sample scoring forms are included.
