This article discusses the characteristics of various features that should be present in a good patrol bike.
Abstract
A well-made mountain bike is required for patrol that covers 5,000 or 6,000 miles a year and includes the stress of being thrown on curbs, ridden on stairs and cobblestone streets, and traversing off-road conditions. The author, a certified instructor in the International Police Mountain Bike Association, advises that a suitable patrol bike could be purchased for about $1,000. He discusses the features of bike frames, drive trains (shifting system and front and rear derailleurs), pedals, brakes, suspension, seats, and tires. Although many bike manufacturers produce products that would be suitable for various types of police patrol, this article outlines the characteristics of seven of the top choices, which range in price from $350 to $1,500.
