The South Australian police, in consultation with Aboriginal communities, have developed a comprehensive program to improve police-Aboriginal relations, particularly in remote Aboriginal communities.
Abstract
Program changes currently under way are a review of police training in Aboriginal affairs, an examination of courses in Aboriginal studies, and a review of the Aboriginal liaison system with the direct involvement of Aboriginal people. Proposals planned are recruitment of more Aboriginal police officers, police involvement in education programs for Aboriginals, and a review of police operational instructions pertaining to Aboriginals. A particular focus has been police services in remote Aboriginal communities, notably the Pitjantjatjara Lands. Due to Aboriginal complaints that police services are inadequate, plans are underway to select and train officers to serve in these remote communities. A female officer will participate in regular patrols to improve policing services to Aboriginal women. Aboriginals will be recruited to serve as police aides in Aboriginal communities. The aides will be trained in basic policing tasks relevant to the Aboriginal communities.
