A SOCIOLOGISTS VIEW OF THE RELATIONS BETWEEN POLICE AND THE BLACKS IN URBAN GHETTOS.
Abstract
SINCE NO EASY SOLUTIONS EXIST TO RESOLVE THE UNDERSTANDABLE ANIMOSITY BETWEEN GHETTO DWELLERS AND THE POLICE FORCE, IT MUST BE UNDERSTOOD THAT THE PORTRAIT OF THE POLICE IN THE COMMUNITY OF AMERICAN NEGROES REVEALS RACIAL PREJUDICES THAT ARE NOT EASILY TOLERABLE FOR THE BLACKMAN. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CREATING A NEW SENSE OF POLICE PROFESSIONALISM INCLUDES LEGAL EDUCATION OF POLICE AND A POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS UNIT WHICH MUST RECREATE THE IMAGE OF THE POLICEMAN AND HIS ROLE TO BEING SOCIAL WORKER ORIENTED.
