Abstract
The 120th Annual IACP Conference was attended by over 13,000 participants, who experienced firsthand the new advances in police services and products. The article on police safety in responding to domestic violence calls notes the danger these cases pose to both officers and victims, and suggestions are offered for improving officer training. Another article features the work of the U.S. Justice Department's Community Relations Service, which provides resources that assist communities in resolving conflicts and restoring peace. An article on ethical defensibility advises using the intelligence-led policing template in avoiding the appearance of unconstitutional policing. An article on police planning for active shooter incidents focuses on the management of victims and their families in such crises. The article on police responses to stalking emphasizes the importance of developing information on the pattern of stalking behavior rather than focusing on the one incident that may have prompted the victim to contact the police. An article that addresses unconventional crises to which police must respond notes their characteristics of complexity and unpredictability, which requires planning for diverse, sometimes hypothetical crises, so police are not totally surprised and unprepared. Regular magazine columns deal with recent research, technology, recent legislation, highway safety, and product and services updates.
