This article, which originally appeared in the Police Journal in July 1931, describes a murder which occurred in Southampton (UK) and was solved by Scotland Yard.
Abstract
The details of the case, in which Vivian Messiter, an agent for the Wolf's Head Oil Company, was murdered in the local depot of the Company, are provided in terms of suspects, evidence, and investigative techniques. The investigation was conducted by Scotland Yard as well as the local police constables, who were in large measure responsible for the successful outcome of the investigation. Although much of the evidence was circumstantial, enough material evidence was collected to convict the defendant, who was also guilty of fraud.
