This article discusses the development and implementation of the police medical technician (PMT) program in Chicago Heights, Ill. which was developed for the university police department of Governors State University.
Abstract
The PMT program was developed to train police in emergency procedures to be used at an accident in which minutes spent waiting for emergency medical technicians or paramedics in mobile intensive care units could be critical for the victim. The program covered basic human anatomy, vital signs, circulation, bleeding, shock, bandaging techniques, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, traumatic injuries, medical emergencies, triage and disaster plans, and obstetrical emergencies. Instructors were registered nurses and/or certified paramedics. The course lasted 10 weeks and concluded with a final practical exam. An annual refresher course and exam required for recertification are part of the program.
