This book presents sophisticated defensive tactics and techniques for dealing with confrontations when police use of guns cannot be legally justified.
Abstract
Defensive tactics must work on the street, be defensible in court, and be administratively feasible. The 21 chapters in this volume present a broad range of nonlethal defensive tactics. Topics discussed include physical fitness, the psychology of confrontation, the continuum of force, body language, oral control, and verbal tactics. The use of restraints is examined, with techniques illustrated for blanket hold, escort position, pressure-point control, touch pressure points, the wrist lock come along, and three quick penetration points. Active countermeasures, such as the stunning technique and diffused strike, are detailed. A review of neck restraints discusses the carotid restraint technique, danger of the bar arm hold, safety, and medical and legal concerns. Additional techniques described include short stick techniques (the Kubotan); use of the Yawara; proper use of the flashlight, impact weapons, and handcuffing techniques. Also highlighted are the use of appropriate and deadly force, knife threats, 'humane' devices, legal concerns, and training issues involving women. Photo illustrations.
