A COLLECTION OF FIFTEEN PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE 1973 MEETINGS OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CRIMINOLOGY, DEALING WITH SUCH POLICE ISSUES AS PROFESSIONALIZATION, POLICE EFFECTIVENESS, ORGANIZATIONAL PRESSURES, AND CORRUPTION.
Abstract
EACH OF THE ARTICLES ADDRESSES SOME OF THESE BASIC POLICE ISSUES. THE FIRST SELECTION PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF THE PROBLEMS FACING THE POLICE AND A REVIEW OF THE GENERAL CONTENT OF THE SUBSEQUENT PAPERS. AMONG THE TOPICS EXAMINED IN THIS COLLECTION ARE THE SOURCES OF POLICE CORRUPTION AS A FORM OF ORGANIZATIONAL DEVIANCE, VARIOUS TECHNIQUES OF INTERVENTION AND CONTROL OF THE POLICE, AND THE VIEWS OF CAMPUS POLICE FOLLOWING A CAMPUS DISTURBANCE. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE THE CAUSES AND CORRELATES OF POLICE ATTITUDES, CROSS-CULTURAL DIFFERENCES IN POLICE ATTITUDES, AND THE RELATIONSHIP OF POLICE VIOLENCE TO THEIR BELIEFS. THE DISCRIMINATORY PROCEDURES USED IN POLICE RECRUITMENT, LEADERSHIP CHARACTERISTICS OF MALE AND FEMALE POLICE OFFICERS, AND THE SOCIO-CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE POLICE ARE EXPLORED AS WELL. FINALLY, THE LAST THREE STUDIES PRESENTED IN THE COLLECTION TRACE SIGNIFICANT ATTITUDINAL OPERATIONAL, AND ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGES IN SUCH DIVERSE POLICE AGENCIES AS THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION, THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE, AND THE GARDA SIOCHANA OF THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND.
