Abstract
USING A QUESTIONNAIRE DISTRIBUTED TO 298 POLICE AGENCIES NATIONWIDE, THE AUTHOR SOLICITED INFORMATION CONCERNING CURRENT PROMOTIONAL METHODS. HE FOUND THAT MOST PROCEDURES WERE ESTABLISHED BY A CIVIL SERVICE AGENCY. HE PRESENTS HIS DATA AND CONCLUSIONS CONCERNING THE RELATION OF THE FOLLOWING FACTORS TO PROMOTION - PRIOR SERVICE WITH THE DEPARTMENT, YEARS IN PREVIOUS RANK, EDUCATION, MEDICAL, PHYSICAL, AND MENTAL CONDITIONS, WRITTEN TESTS, PERFORMANCE RATINGS AND INTERVIEWS. THE QUESTIONNAIRE AND RESULTS IN TABULAR FORM ARE INCLUDED.
