THE POLICE-SOCIAL SERVICE PROJECT WAS A THREE-YEAR ACTION RESEARCH PROGRAM WHICH PLACED GRADUATE STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONAL SOCIAL WORKERS IN TWO MIDDLE-CLASS COMMUNITY TO TEST THE EFFECTS OF INTER-PROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION.
Abstract
THE PROJECT, A MULTI-SERVICE UNIT, PROVIDED SOCIAL ASSESSMENT, 24-HOUR CRISIS INTERVENTION, ONGOING TREATMENT, AND FOLLOW-UP AND OFFERED REFERRAL TO COMMUNITY AGENCIES TO NON-VIOLENT MISDEMEANANTS AND OTHER JUVENILES AND ADULTS REFERRED BY POLICE OFFICERS AND THE STATE'S ATTORNEY. THE TWO COMMUNITIES INVOLVED IN THIS STUDY WERE NILES AND WHEATON, ILLINOIS. THIS BOOK BEGINS WITH AN OVERVIEW OF THE HIGHLIGHTS, FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS OF THIS PROJECT AND MOVES INTO THE CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK AND SUMMARY OF THE RESEARCH DESIGN. THE PROFILE OF THE COMMUNITIES AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS PRESENT A REALISTIC PICTURE OF THE PEOPLE AND THE WORK WHICH WAS DONE. A CHAPTER ON THE PROCESS OF THE PROJECT'S DEVELOPMENT PROVIDES A HOW-TO-DO-IT SECTION FOR ADMINISTRATORS AND STUDENTS INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT HOW MUCH COMMUNITY WORK IS NEEDED TO INTRODUCE NEW PROGRAMS INTO A SYSTEM. A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE IN POLICE-SOCIAL WORK COOPERATION AND THE DRAMATIC TURNAROUND IN ATTITUDES OF POLICE AND SOCIAL WORKERS TOWARD EACH OTHER ARE DESCRIBED IN AN OUTSIDE RESEARCH STUDY. GUIDELINES FOR STAFF SELECTION AND POLICE REFERRALS TO SOCIAL WORKERS ARE INCLUDED. THE TRAINING PROGRAM, SERVICES PROVIDED AND THE RESULTS ARE DETAILED WITH FACTS AND CASE ILLUSTRATIONS. SIX ADDITIONAL ACTION-MODELS FOR POLICE-SOCIAL WORK COOPERATION DESIGNED TO FIT THE NEEDS OF DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS ARE DISCUSSED. THE TEXT CONCLUDES WITH IMPLICATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT, SOCIAL WORK, THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, RESEARCH, TRAINING AND EDUCATION.
