THE TRAINING DIVISION OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY PROGRAMMED A WORKSHOP DEALING WITH NATIONAL POLICE TRAINING IN APRIL 1978.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING SURVEY WERE TO ACQUAINT POLICE TRAINERS WITH PROGRESS IN THE SURVEY, TO PRESENT TO POLICE TRAINERS PAPERS CONTAINING PROPOSALS FROM INTERESTED PARTIES OUTSIDE THE POLICE SERVICE, AND TO PROVIDE A FORUM FOR DISCUSSION OF INTEREST AREAS. PARTICIPANTS WERE SURVEYED BY TELEPHONE PRIOR TO THE WORKSHOP AND WERE PROVIDED WITH A LIST OF AGENDA ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION. THE SUGGESTED AGENDA ENCOMPASSED TRAINING FOR HOSTAGE AND SIEGE SITUATIONS, TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES IN TRAINING, THE NEED TO KNOW SYNDROME (LENGTH OF INDUCTION TRAINING, SPECIALIZATION AND GENERAL DUTIES TRAINING, AND COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF TRAINING), EXTERNAL EDUCATION FOR INSERVICE TRAINING, TRAINING FOR DOMESTIC CRISIS INTERVENTION, TRAINING OF ABORIGINAL POLICE AIDES, SELECTION BOARD PROCEDURES AND MINIMUM STANDARDS, SPECIALIZED TRAINING FOR INSTRUCTORS, STATUS OF ADULT RECRUITS, INTERCHANGE OF TRAINING AIDS, AND VIABILITY OF CADET TRAINING SYSTEMS. THE LAST TWO AGENDA ITEMS WERE NOT DISCUSSED, BUT POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS WERE ADDRESSED. PRESENTATIONS MADE TO THE WORKSHOP DEALT WITH THE NATIONAL POLICE TRAINING SURVEY (VARIOUS COURSE TOPICS AND TRAINING PROCEDURES), POLICE MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION, AND TERTIARY EDUCATION FOR POLICE. THE WORKSHOP REVEALED A GROWING SENSE OF PROFESSIONALISM IN THE POLICE SERVICE, CONFIRMED IN PART BY THE WIDE INTEREST AMONG POLICE IN OPERATIONAL AND TRAINING FIELDS RELATED TO TERTIARY AND TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS. INFORMATION ON ABORIGINAL POLICE AIDES AND BILINGUAL POLICE IS APPENDED. (DEP)
