This study examines working conditions for policewomen in the former German Democratic Republic (DDR) and in the Federal Republic of Germany (BRD).
Abstract
The study was based on interviews with female police officers and their responses to a 41-item questionnaire. The women were asked about advantages and disadvantages in DDR and BRD workplaces; sexual harassment; promotion opportunities; progression to management positions; equal opportunities; and compatibility of job and family. There is much work to be done to improve working conditions and provide equal opportunities for policewomen. The problems are not specific to the police, but rather affect the whole society. The police establishment reflects society and should invest more in order to become a good role model.
