Abstract
The purpose of this text is to inform the student about policing in American society. The author begins with an overview of who the police are and what their duties entail in the first chapter. The text moves on to an outline of the history of policing in America followed by a discussion of the modern organization of police agencies. The author offers discussions about police management, police discretion, police use of force, police culture and behavior, ethics and deviance, civil liability, and the future of policing in America. The text also includes a chapter on police strategies for controlling the drug problem in modern society. The author includes many theoretical analyses of these topics using such theories as human relations organizational theory and systems theory, among others.
