A BRIEF SKETCH OF THE EQUIPMENT, GOALS, AND PATROL METHODS OF THE MARINE UNIT OF THE CHICAGO POLICE.
Abstract
SIX BOATS COMPOSE THE FLEET. THREE ARE 35 FOOT STEEL-HULLED CRUISERS POWERED BY TWIN 270 H.P. ENGINES, DESIGNED FOR SPEED AND POWER AND EQUIPPED TO REMOVE HEAVY NAVIGATIONAL HAZARDS FROM THE WATER AND ACCOMPLISH RESCUE WORK. THE OTHER THREE BOATS ARE 20 FT., ALUMINUM HULLED CRAFT WITH 100 H.P. GASLOINE INBOARD-OUTBOARD ENGINES, DESIGNED FOR USE IN SHALLOW WATER AND EQUIPPED WITH BOAT POLES, STRETCHERS, LIFE JACKETS, RING BUOYS AND DRAGGING IMPLEMENTS. ALL BOATS ARE EQUIPPED WITH FIVE RADIO CHANNELS WHICH MONITOR THE POLICE RADIO, THE COAST GUARD BAND, SHIP-TO-SHORE, ANOTHER POLICE BOAT, AND A RIVER CHANNEL TO TALK WITH TUGS, LOCK OPERATORS, ETC. THE PATROL IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND ENFORCEMENT OF SAFETY ON THE WATERWAYS, AS WELL AS DEALING WITH CRIMINAL ACTIVITY WITHIN ITS JURISDICTION.
