These 11 papers review the current status of ideas developed by Leslie T. Wilkins in the United States and Great Britain and discuss their impact on criminal justice research and policy.
Abstract
An introduction describes Wilkins' career from 1941 through 1988 as a governmental researcher in England and academician in the United States and presents analyses of his numbers of publications and contributions to criminology. Other papers discuss the statistical distribution of various forms of deviance, the relationship between opportunity and vehicle crime, and information processing and decision guidelines. Additional papers consider the demand for punishment, consumerist perspectives in criminal justice, studies on delinquent generations and cohorts, the change process in criminal justice, and the relationship between research and policy. In the final chapter, Wilkins reviews past criminal justice theory and practice and predicts future developments. Figures, tables, chapter reference lists, and index
