APPLICATION OF A MODIFIED DELINQUENCY PREDICTION INSTRUMENT, THE MODIFIED GLUECKS SOCIAL PREDICTION TABLE, ON AN AUSTRALIAN SAMPLE.
Abstract
FACTORS USED IN THE TABLE ARE SUPERVISION OF BOY BY MOTHER, DISCIPLINE OF BOY BY MOTHER, AND COHESION OF FAMILY. RESULTS ARE DESCRIBED WHICH ARE OBTAINED IN A SETTING DIFFERENT FROM THE ONE IN WHICH IT WAS DEVELOPED, SO THAT SOME EVIDENCE CAN BE PROVIDED FOR THE WIDER APPLICABILITY OF THIS TABLE. THE FACTOR RATINGS WERE OBTAINED FROM DATA COLLECTED ON DELINQUENT, FIFTH GRADE BOYS. A FOLLOW UP WAS CONDUCTED TEN YEARS LATER TO DETERMINE WHICH BOYS HAD HAD OFFICIAL POLICE CONTACT FOR CRIMINAL OFFENSES. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT FOR A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE, AND USING OBJECTIVELY BASED DATA, MEASURES OF SOCIAL CLASS AND ECOLOGICAL AREA ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE APPROPRIATE AND EFFICIENT AS PREDICTORS OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, THAN THE THREE FAMILY FACTORS IN THE GLUECKS SOCIAL PREDICTION TABLE, EXCEPT IN CASES WHERE THESE HAVE BEEN RETROSPECTIVELY APPLIED. STATISTICAL TABLES SUPPLEMENT THE DISCUSSION. REFERENCES. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
