RESULTS OF A SURVEY TO EXAMINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ORGANIZED CRIMINAL ACTIVITY AND THEFT LOSSES INCURRED BY INDIANA INDUSTRIES.
Abstract
QUESTIONNAIRES WERE SENT TO 1,135 LARGE INDUSTRIES INVOLVED IN CONSTRUCTION, MANUFACTURING, TRANSPORTATION, RETAILING, AND WHOLESALING. INFORMATION SOUGHT INVOLVED PERCEPTION OF THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE THEFT PROBLEM, ACTUAL AMOUNT AND NATURE OF THE THEFT LOSS, LINKAGE OF THE THEFT PROBLEM TO ORGANIZED CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. AMONG THE 405 USABLE RESPONDENTS, THE THEFT LOSS REPORTED RANGED FROM $2 TO $4 MILLION. NEARLY HALF OF THIS LOSS WAS ATTRIBUTED TO ORGANIZED CRIME. BY USING THE DATA FROM THE FIRMS WHO RESPONDED, IT WAS POSSIBLE TO PROJECT THE LOSSES INCURRED BY ALL THE FIRMS SURVEYED. THE REPORT CONCLUDES THAT MANAGEMENT'S INFORMATION WAS LESS THAN ADEQUATE, AND THAT MANAGEMENT EITHER HAS A LOW PERCEPTION OR AN UNWILLINGNESS TO ADMIT THE LINKAGE BETWEEN ORGANIZED CRIME AND THEFT LOSSES. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS REFERENCES, STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION CODES, AND STATISTICAL MATERIAL.
