INFORMATION USED IN DECIDING ON PROBATION FOR AN OFFENDER.
Abstract
AN EXPLORATION OF THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS AT THE PROBATION OFFICER LEVEL FOCUSING ON THE PRESENTENCE REPORT AND THE DATA UTILIZED IN RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PROBATION OR IMPRISONMENT. CERTAIN DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OFFENDER POPULATION--PRIOR RECORD, CURRENT OFFENSE, AND DATA RELATING TO STABILITY--ARE IMPORTANT IN DETERMINING THE RECOMMENDATION. HOWEVER, THE ORDER IN WHICH PROBATION OFFICERS SEEK SUCH INFORMATION AND THE POINT IN THEIR INFORMATION-GATHERING ACTIVITY WHEN DECISIONS ARE MADE REGARDING THE RECOMMENDATION HAVE NOT BEEN DETERMINED. THESE AND RELATED QUESTIONS ARE EXPLORED. AUTHOR MODIFIED.
