DESCRIBES PROJECT DENOVO AND PROJECT REMAND, TWO PRETRIAL DIVIERSION PROGRAMS OPERATING IN MINNEAPOLIS AND SAINT PAUL RESPECTIVELY.
Abstract
UNDER PROJECT REMAND THE PROSECUTION CALLS FOR THE SCREENING OF THOSE ARRESTED FOR CRIMINAL OFFENSES WITHIN 24 HOURS TO DETERMINE THEIR ELIGIBILITY FOR PRETRIAL RELEASE. THE PROJECT STAFF WILL CONCENTRATE ON THOSE ACCUSED OF MISDEMEANORS. THE PROJECT IS CONCERNED WITH TRAINING, TEACHING, AND REHABILITATING THE ACCUSED ON THE OUTSIDE, DRAWING ON THE RESOURCES OF 204 COMMUNITY SERVICE AGENCIES. OPERATION DENOVO IS A PRETRIAL DIVERSION PROJECT OPERATING OUT OF HENNEPIN COUNTY. IT IS AIMED AT HELPING RACIAL MINORITIES, AND ITS PRIMARY OBJECTIVE IS TO GET EMPLOYMENT FOR CLIENTS. THE MAJORITY OF THE CLIENTS ARE CHARGED WITH PETTY THEFT - FROM STOLEN PROPERTY TO WRITING BAD CHECKS. THE SECOND LARGEST CATEGORY OF DIVERTED OFFENSES IS DISORDERLY CONDUCT. HENNIPIN COUNTY
