Because fraud prevention and control require the analysis of comprehensive, reliable, and timely information, this study determined what information is currently available about the nature and scope of fraud in government programs.
Abstract

Specifically, the study examines information describing the nature and scope of detected fraud as well as undetected fraud. The report provides an overview of the backgrounds and pivotal roles of major Federal agencies involved in the prevention and control of fraud and a compilation of preliminary findings based on discussions with staff of these agencies and an extensive literature review. Finally, the report discusses the major issues confronting Federal agencies in the development of comprehensive, reliable, and accurate information for the control and prevention of fraud. A total of 42 footnotes is given. The bibliography has approximately 85 entries. (Author abstract modified)
