Programs designed to prevent child sexual abuse are using recent research findings and are targeted mainly at children.
Abstract
The diversity of potential sexual abusers and the low probability of interesting them in prevention has resulted in the decision to target programs to potential child victims. Workshops, storybooks, coloring books, advertising campaigns, children's theater, and films are all being used to convey prevention education. Education generally reaches mixed classrooms, because both boys and girls are victims. Specialized programs are also addressing the needs of handicapped children and those who have already been abused. Some books and groups are designed for parents. However, parents' known reluctance to discuss sexual matters with their children currently limit the potential of approaches designed solely for them. Concepts common to all prevention efforts are the complexity of sexual abuse, the fear the issue causes for parents, and the controversy in many communities about all aspects of sex education. Successful prevention programs have developed effective organizational approaches in working with communities and schools. Current conceptual dilemmas are also under discussion. The relationship between sex education and sexual abuse prevention is the most important dilemma. 27 references.
