OVERVIEW OF THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF CRIME IN THE UNITED STATES, ITS SOCIAL CAUSES, AND PROPOSED MEANS OF DETERRENCE.
Abstract
PART ONE DISCUSSES THE MAJOR CATEGORIES OF CRIME, GIVING NATIONAL AND REGIONAL RATES OF INCIDENCE AND SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILES OF OFFENDERS. THE THESIS IS PRESENTED THAT CRIME AND DELINQUENCY ARE IN LARGE MEASURE RESPONSES TO FRUSTRATION AND INEQUALITY, LACK OF ROLE MODELS, AND THE AVAILABILITY AND INTENSITY OF THE CRIMINAL SUBCULTURE. FURTHERMORE, THE AUTHOR FEELS THAT THE EXISTING CRIME CONTROL PROCESS CONTRIBUTES TO THE SOCIAL CAUSES OF CRIME. IN PART TWO HE DISCUSSES HOW PROPOSED GOVERNMENTAL AND PRIVATE MECHANISMS FOR SOCIAL CHANGE CAN LEAD TO EFFECTIVE PREVENTIVE STEPS.
