'PREWARNS' IS A COMPUTER-BASED INFORMATION SYSTEM PRESENTLY IN OPERATION IN THE UNIVERSITY CITY, MISSOURI POLICE DEPARTMENT.
Abstract
TWO KEY FEATURES IN THE PREWARNS SYSTEM ARE A VERY DETAILED METHOD OF CLASSIFICATION FOR REPORTED CRIMES, AND THE INCLUSION IN THE DATA BASE OF MANY SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC FACTS ABOUT THE GEOGRAPHIC SECTORS COVERED BY THE SYSTEM. INCLUSION OF THESE FACTS, WHICH DESCRIBE SUCH THINGS AS LAND USE AND POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS, PROVIDES FOR RELIABLE DETERMINATION OF VULNERABLE CRIME AREAS AND FOR LONG-RANGE PREDICTIONS CONCERNING CHANGING CRIME PATTERNS.
