The report reviews survey findings of prisoners’ experiences with contracted prisoner escort and court custody services in England and Wales.
Abstract
The report looks at the satisfaction of contracted prisoner escort and court custody services from the viewpoint of the prisoner in lieu of past research that looked at satisfaction through relevant agencies, such as police and prison reception officers, court clerks, prison governors and lay observers. The survey demonstrated that in general prisoners were being treated well through the use of contractors but there were areas where improvement was needed: improvements to the temperature and cleanliness of the vehicle, improvements related to custody staff informing prisoners about their rights and the complaints procedure, and improvements in access to medicine and doctors.
