COLLECTION OF ARTICLES ON PRISON PROTESTS AND THE PROBLEMS, SUCH AS OVERCROWDING AND BARBARIC LIVING CONDITIONS, ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR OCCURRENCES.
Abstract
THE FIRST SECTION OF THE BOOK DISCUSSES THE LIVING CONDITIONS WHICH PRISONERS MUST ENDURE. IT OUTLINES SUCH PROBLEMS AS LACK OF ADEQUATE LIVING SPACE AND RACIAL TENSIONS. THE SECOND SET OF ARTICLES DEALS WITH THE DENIAL OF FUNDAMENTAL CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS TO PRISONERS. THE TWO ARTICLES FOCUS ON THE QUESTION OF WHETHER MEN IN PRISON SHOULD LOSE ALL OF THEIR BASIC RIGHTS AS AMERICANS. THE THIRD SECTION DEALS WITH SOME OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF POOR PRISON CONDITIONS AND THE DENIAL OF BASIC RIGHTS. THESE ARTICLES, MANY OF WHICH ARE WRITTEN BY INMATES, DISCUSS THE ORGANIZATION OF MILITANT POLITICAL GROUPS TO PROTEST POOR PRISON CONDITIONS. FINALLY, A SECTION ON POLITICAL REFORM DOCUMENTS THE FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM TO ADOPT SUGGESTED REFORMS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
