Abstract
The College on Problems of Drug Dependence, Inc., is a nonprofit organization that offers drug testing and evaluation services to academic institutions, government, and industry. This collection of papers includes the presentations of the Nathan B. Eddy Memorial Award and the Marian W. Fischman Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Drug Abuse Field by a Woman Scientist, presented to Charles O’Brien and Maxine Stitzer, respectively. Seventeen symposia were conducted at the meeting; the proceedings of each are presented, including opening remarks by chairpersons and summaries of speakers comments. Among the symposia topics were an examination of pathways from use to addiction; sex differences in the addicted brain; new vocational rehabilitation models for substance abusers; dopamine effects in the human brain; and the effects of exposure to buprenorphine during pregnancy and lactation, among others. Four annual reports are presented: the 2003 Biological Evaluation of Compounds for Their Physical Dependence Potential and Abuse Liability; the 2003 Evaluation of New Compounds for Opioid Activity; the 2003 Dependence Studies of New Compounds in the Rhesus Monkey, Rat and Mouse; and the 2003 Progress Report from the Testing Program for Stimulant and Depressant Drugs.
