This report presents profiles of 51 countries in Europe and North America with respect to crime trends, arrests, case processing, corrections, and the structure and operation of the criminal justice system.
Abstract
The profiles are based on the responses to the Fifth United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operation of Criminal Justice Systems (1990-1994). This information was supplemented by other information available to the expert group that performed the analysis. The report combines the information from all available data sources for each country into 13 indicators of crime and the criminal justice system. The crime indicators include indexes for burglary, homicide, nonfatal violence, violence against women, motor vehicle crime, petty crime, and corruption. Other indexes focus on opportunity, motivation, law enforcement resources, gender balance among criminal justice practitioners, and public attitudes toward police performance.
