Abstract
In his keynote address, "Tribal Responsibility with Regard to Child Abuse and Neglect," Kelly Haney, a member of the Oklahoma State House of Representatives, recognized the problem of child abuse and the lack of funds for preventive programs. Other issues discussed included what the educator should know about cultural factors, Indian parents, and child abuse and neglect; developmental assessment of the abused and/or battered child; how alcohol and drug abuse is related to the abuse and neglect of Indian children; the Indian Child Welfare Act; physical assessment of the abused and neglected child; setting up a child protection team within the Indian community; providing foster care and other family services to Indian families; and high risk indicators and the hospital's role in child abuse and neglect cases. Participants and presenters are listed along with results of a participant questionnaire and conference evaluation.
