This article introduces the principles, procedures, and standards for use of the polygraph in China.
Abstract
China has a long history of the detection of deception, but modern scientific technology involved in the detection of deception was not present in China until 1943, when it came to China from America. For ideological reasons, the polygraph was rejected by the People's Republic of China; however, during the 1980s, traditional methods of criminal investigation were deemed insufficient to counter the crime increase, so new investigative techniques were considered, including the polygraph. The Chinese term for the polygraph means in English, "Psycho-information Probe" (PiP). Licensing is the first step to becoming a polygraph examiner in China. This qualifies a polygrapher to administer polygraph examinations in criminal investigations. Licenses are issued by the Ministry of Public Security. This article describes China's procedure for administering a polygraph. Polygraphers apply the concept of resonance in interpreting any change of responses aroused during the examination. In physics, resonance is the tendency of a system (usually a linear system) to oscillate with larger amplitude at some frequencies than at others. At these resonant frequencies, even small periodic driving forces can produce large amplitude oscillations, because the system stores vibrational energy. When a response is detected from a subject, the intensity of it should be recorded and analyzed. China's data-processing system is called Sun2000. The intensity of response is derived from each physiological channel. They are from respiration, electrodermal response, and cardioactivity. 1 figure and 19 references
