INMATE EDUCATIONAL AND PRE-VOCATIONAL CENTER LOCATED IN THE COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS JAIL SINCE 1967 AND STAFFED BY TEACHERS, COUNSELORS, AND VOLUNTEERS.
Abstract
PACE INSTITUTE IS A NON-PROFIT CORPORATION UNITING THE EFFORTS OF THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY, PRIVATE CITIZENS, AND GOVERNMENT IN AN EFFORT TO REHABILITATE OFFENDERS. CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE PROGRAM ARE FUNDED THROUGH FOUNDATIONS, CORPORATIONS AND INDIVIDUAL GIFTS. BASIC EDUCATION AND TRAINING PHASES ARE PRESENTLY FUNDED THROUGH FEDERAL GRANTS AND CONTRACTS FROM THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF LABOR UNDER THE MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING ACT. PACE HAS A GROUP OF PRE-VOCATIONAL SHOPS, MANAGED BY A STAFF OF VOCATIONAL TEACHERS, WHERE THE TRAINEE NORMALLY SPENDS TWO HOURS A DAY FOR THREE MONTHS. THIS IS AN EXPLORATORY PROCEDURE WHERE A TRAINEE DISCOVERS HIS VOCATIONAL INTEREST AND CAPABILITIES. THE GENERAL AND NON-READING APTITUDE TEST BATTERY PROVIDES AN INDICATION OF HIS VOCATIONAL APTITUDES, AND WORKING IN VARIOUS VOCATIONAL AREAS ALLOWS HIM TO EXPLORE HIS INTERESTS. PACE PROVIDES FACILITIES FOR TELEVISION AND REFRIGERATOR REPAIR, WELDING, WOODWORKING, ELECTRONICS, AUTOMOBILE MECHANICS, MACHINES SHOP, MECHANICAL DRAWING AND DRAFTING. AN ILLINOIS STATE EMPLOYMENT SERVICE JOB DEVELOPER AND COUNSELORS WORK WITH THE TRAINEE TO TIE TOGETHER THE TRAINING RECEIVED AT PACE WITH THE LABOR MARKET. FOLLOW-UP COUNSELORS SEEK TO MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH THE TRAINEE TO GIVE HIM SUPPORTIVE SERVICES, PARTICULARLY DURING THE FIRST THREE MONTHS AFTER RELEASE AND CONTINUING FOR A MINIMUM OF 24 MONTHS. VOLUNTEERS GIVE AN AFTERNOON OR EVENING A WEEK FOR TUTORING, COUNSELING, SEMINARS, OR DIALOGUE GROUPS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
