Abstract
Following a review of the research on the presentation of race and crime in the media, the authors discuss the news production process to develop an understanding of the social construction of news before analyzing how race influences the decisionmaking of reporters and editors. Finally, the chapter discusses how racial issues are presented in the news and how they affect the news production process. Ways to improve the depiction of black Americans in the news media are recommended. 55 references
