Abstract
THREE DISTINCT STYLES OF DELINQUENT LIFE IN THREE DIFFERENT LOWER-CLASS AREAS OF A LARGE EASTERN CITY ARE EXPLORED - RACKETEERING, GANG FIGHTING, AND THEFT. EACH OF THESE SUBCULTURES NEEDS A DIFFERENT APPROACH. THE TRADITIONS, STRUCTURE, AND ACTIVITIES OF GANG LIFE, DIFFERING ASPIRATIONS AND CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS, THE KINDS OF LEGITIMATE AND ILLEGITIMATE OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE TO DELINQUENTS IN THE RESPECTIVE NEIGHBORHOODS, AND A STRATEGY FOR ELIMINATING OR MODIFYING SUBCULTURES ARE DESCRIBED.
