This article discusses the relationships between prison guards and prisoners.
Abstract
The relationship between prison guards and prisoners is key to understanding the prison world. Prisons are characterized by the recognition of prisoners’ rights, the intervention of external organizations in the decision taken by prison authorities, and the importance of expert practitioners. These relationships appear to be conflicted or negotiated depending on the location and the individuals implicated. They originate according to the individual’s interest and enable the establishment of the equilibrium in the prison. Their development demonstrates the evolution in the power relation, and reveals the solitude and division developed in each of the groups. 11 notes, 42 references
