This publication presents the proceedings of the 2002 Meeting of the Homicide Research Working Group (HRWG), which convened in St. Louis, MO, from May 30 through June 2, 2002, and focused on the relationship between non-lethal and lethal violence.
Abstract
The HRWG is an international and interdisciplinary organization whose members focus on understanding and reducing lethal violence. The opening presentation, presented by Rolf Loeber of the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh, focused on the prediction of homicide by young men in two community samples in Pittsburgh. The response to the presentation, offered by Finn-Aage Esbensen, questioned the absence of girls in the sample and asked about the role of context in the homicides represented in the sample. Following this opening presentation, a total of 47 papers or posters are presented within 11 categories: (1) evaluation and prevention of community violence; (2) violence research, theory, and policy; (3) contextual features of non-lethal and lethal violence; (4) violence and social control; (5) intimate partner and sexual violence; (6) the social context of lethal and non-lethal violence; (7) violence within groups, networks, and organizations; (8) cross-national profiles of homicide; (9) the California Linked Homicide File; (10) homicide and drugs; and (11) poster, demonstration, and literature displays. The preface notes that due to changes in how the HRWG publishes its meeting proceedings and because of concerns over publication rights, the HRWG is now allowing paper presenters to submit non-polished versions of their papers for publication in this document. Indeed, in some cases summaries are accepted in lieu of full papers. Also presented throughout the publication are discussion notes relevant to the papers presented in each section. These notes include the names of participants and their comments. Appendixes contain the 2002 meeting agenda and a listing of symposium participants. Tables, figures, footnotes, references, appendixes
