This report describes the research, publications, programs, and other activities of the American Bar Foundation during 1997; this nonprofit national research institute conducts basic empirical research on law and legal institutions
Abstract
Research studies focused on changes in the regulation of international air carriers by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, and methods of encouraging and supporting full and flexible compliance with legal and other obligations in infant intensive care. Additional research focused on hate speech and freedom of expression on college campuses, the relationship between State building and extra-governmental policymakers during 1918-1945, and the legal culture of work and employment during the 17th and 18th centuries. Further research examined information processing in justice evaluation, maritime law during 1779-1938, informal and formal social control in Chicago neighborhoods, racial discrimination, sex discrimination, dispute resolution and litigation, the internationalization of legal values and legal practices, and attorney education and responsibilities.
