This report presents a chronology of the American Medical Association's Physicians' Campaign Against Family Violence, together with a national violence report card that describes and assesses the nature and extent of violence in the United States.
Abstract
The report card gives the country's overall progress on violence a grade of D, based on four crime categories and the following criteria: crime rates, crime reporting, public awareness, effective victim services, and low costs to society. The report focused on four types of crime: domestic assault, sexual assault, public violence such as gang and gun violence, and violence in entertainment media. Family violence received the highest grade of the four categories, primarily because of increases in public awareness and reporting of offenses, as well as the availability of intervention and assistance programs. However, the incidence of domestic assault continues to escalate. Noting that violence causes are deeply rooted in intractable social issues such as poverty, drugs, and the decline of the family, the report urged the personal contributions of every person to address the problem.
