THE STATE HIGHWAY PATROL USED SAMPLING PROCEDURES, STATISTICAL ANALYSES, AND SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION FORMS TO AID TRAFFIC SAFETY RESEARCHERS. IN 1971, A PICTORIAL RATING SCALE WAS ADOPTED BY THE PATROL TO ASSESS DAMAGE TO VEHICLES INVOLVED IN CRASHES.
